To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the OG record — Swift later released 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in October 2023 — Us gave 1989 a spin and decided which song best corresponds to each astrological sign.

Aries: ‘Shake It Off’
The first single from 1989 is perfect for the first sign of the Zodiac. Swift’s playful and joyous dismissal of the haters, who are ultimately “gonna hate, hate, hate,” screams Aries. You won’t catch these self-assured fire signs living life on anyone else’s terms or kowtowing to their critics. Confident and honest, an Aries will call out the “fakers” and flirt with that “fella over there with the hella good hair” in the same breath. They’re not afraid to be a bit corny either, and will probably unironically talk about “getting down to this sick beat.”
While many of Swift’s songs about facing public scrutiny are a bit darker — see The Tortured Poets Department’s “Clara Bow” and “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” — “Shake It Off” is simply fun and unbothered, just like an Aries.

Taurus: ‘All You Had to Do Was Stay’
Tauruses are straightforward communicators and they don’t like to play games. You can count on them to look back at a failed relationship and deliver a devastatingly simple summation like, “All you had to do was stay.” It’s hard to argue with that, and no one should, because these stubborn earth signs rarely back down from their firm convictions.
As one of the most loyal signs, Tauruses will “want to believe you when you say you’ve changed,” but that doesn’t mean they give out second chances easily. They aren’t ones to forgive and forget, which is why they’re often “gone forever when you say goodbye.”
Gemini: ‘Blank Space’
Geminis have one of the more mischievous reputations of the zodiac, and they lean into that, much like Swift leaned into the public’s perception of her as an “insane” serial dater with “a long list of ex lovers” on “Blank Space.” Just as Swift explored a fictionalized version of herself on this 1989 single, Geminis tend to exaggerate how chaotic they are.
There are some messy Gemini stereotypes, however, that ring true. These air signs are highly adaptable, and they’re able to “find out what you want” and then “be that girl for a month.” While this allows them to form connections easily, it also makes it hard for them to share their true natures with others. Don’t feel too bad for them, though. Geminis love nothing more than a juicy story, especially if they’re at the center of it.

Cancer: ‘Clean’
Us had to save the most emotionally devastating 1989 track for Cancers, who are perpetually in their feelings. These water signs love hard, and they won’t downplay just how much a breakup destroyed them. They know that the only way to move through heartbreak is to feel it fully; that being able to “finally breathe” again comes after “drowning” in sorrow first.
Despite their capacity for pain, Cancers don’t seek it out. They crave security, peace and comfortable home environments, so once they get “clean” from a bad relationship, they’re “never gonna risk” going back to that dynamic again.

Leos are confident and have a flair for the dramatic, so if you insist on letting them go, they will at least make sure you miss them. When these fire signs feel a relationship start to fizzle, it’s important to them that their soon-to-be-ex has memories of them “in a nice dress” at sunset with “red lips and rosy cheeks.” Don’t be surprised if you show up to break it off with a Leo only to find that they’ve never looked better.
Ruled by the sun, Leos are the warm, bright, center of the solar system, and they know it — just like they know that memories of them will “follow you around” long after you’ve parted ways.

Capricorn: ‘Welcome to New York’
Capricorns are go-getters, and they want to be at the center of the action. Nobody romanticizes a city that never sleeps like these ambitious and hard-working earth signs, who feel at home in a place filled with people who all “wanted something more.” Capricorns strive for greatness and have no interest in taking the easy route to achieve it.
